The Story Behind African Mango
Irvingia gabonensis sounds more like an adventuring explorer than a West African tree, but some amazing discoveries have come from it nonetheless. It’s usually referred to as the bush mango or the African Mango, and apart from its excellent taste, it also works as a fantastic weight loss supplement.
In the early 1990s, African Mango/Irvingia gabonensis was brought to the attention of western scientists who were intrigued with the ogbono, the nuts of the African Mango. These had traditionally been eaten plain like any other nut, or sometimes ground up to garnish food. The scientists discovered that an extract from the nuts had weight loss properties and quickly put it to the test.
The Test
Here’s where the story really gets interesting. Test subjects were given the supplement in one test and told not to change their lifestyle at all: to eat the same foods and not exercise any more than they usually did. They still lost weight. If there is a Holy Grail of weight lost pills, African Mango is certainly making a good case for itself. In the second test, test subjects were fed a controlled diet and not a single one mentioned being hungry, even though they were eating much less than before the test began two months before. A third test involved test subjects who lost a substantial amount of body weight, not to mention a 1/5th reduction in their waist size. These were verified, clinical tests. The test group on African Mango lost more than 18 pounds for every 1 pound lost by the group placed on a placebo.
Other tests were conducted and it was discovered that in addition to the monumental weight loss properties of the Irvingia gabonensis, the extract also worked to suppress hunger, lower cholesterol (in a big way), and regulate blood sugar levels.
Interesting Facts about African Mango
Irvingia gabonensis has long been recognized in Africa for its health benefits. The Benin Army took advantage of the ogbono to keep its soldiers in fighting shape during the early 1800s.
A little known fact is that the United Nations had a hand in bringing African Mango to light, working in the background to see it make a debut in the commercial market. If the UN believes in the powers of African Mango, it stands to reason it is a product that is worth looking at.
